Lois Holcomb Saxton

Lois Holcomb Saxton, a second generation native Nevadan, died on April, 21, 2014. A member of a pioneer Nevada family, she was born on January 12, 1920 to Thad and Frances Judd Holcomb, in the old Huffaker House on South Virginia Street in Reno. After her father’s untimely death in 1928, she, her mother, and siblings moved from the ranch into town where she attended local schools, Mt Rose Elementary, B.D Billinghurst, and Reno High. She then attended Lux College in San Francisco; leaving in 1940 to return to Reno to marry William A. Saxton, a Sparks boy. They started their married life in Carlin, later returned to Reno, and ultimately settled in Fallon. Lois served on the Governor’s Commission on the Status of Women in Nevada, devoted time to both local and state politics, and volunteered at the Community Service Thrift Shop in Fallon. She was a nationally certified flower judge. Lois was a member of Chapter D, PEO, the Daughters of American Revolution, and Beta Sigma Phi. Lois saw the value in all people and was relied upon by her family and friends as an understanding and encouraging source of love, wisdom, and support. Lois was a life long learner and participated fully up until her death. Lois was preceded in death by her husband Bill in 1987, her sister, Janet Hunter; brother, Grove Holcomb; and nephews, Paul Hunter and Thad Holcomb. She is survived by her brother Thad and wife Betty Holcomb of Reno; her children, Bill and Fianna Saxton of Reno and Susan and Rod McCormick of Fallon. She dearly loved her grandchildren, pat and Amanda Saxton of Sacramento, CA.; Jim and Megan Saxton of Littleton, CO.; John McCormick and Gina Latta of Reno. Her great-grandchildren, Archer; Merit; Lily and Miles Saxton were a special joy to her. She is also survived by nieces and nephews; cousins and many cherished friends. A Memorial service will be held at Oats Park Art Center on Saturday, May 10, 2014 at 2:00 PM. Donations may be made in memory of Lois to The Churchill Arts Council PO box 1440 Fallon, NV 89407
