Carson River watershed bus tour set for June

Participants can learn about river restoration and other matters during a Carson River watershed tour next month.

The two-day bus tour is designed to cover various issues and provide information on the river from headwaters to terminus.

More than 25 speakers will deliver the information, among them General Manager Ed James of the Carson Water Subconservancy District and Brenda Hunt, the Subconservancy District watershed coordinator.

They will lead off the tour talks.

The tour is being put together by the Subconservancy District and the Carson River Coalition.

Among the others slated to speak are Dave Berger, Nevada Hydrologic Studies chief with the U.S. Geological Survey; Ann Bollinger, natural resource specialist with the Carson City Parks and Recreation Open Space division; and Carmen Gonzales, environmental protection specialist and permaculture designer with the Fallon Paiute-Shoshone Tribe.

Other topics expected to be covered include water rights; water quality and quantity; floodplain protection; noxious-weed management; recreation; and education or outreach programs.

Among the expected stops are the Carson City Quill water-treatment plant, Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park in Carson Valley, Hope Valley, Harvey Place Reservoir, White Hall at the River Fork Ranch, the Carson River at Morgan Hill, the Rolling A Ranch, Buckland Station, Lahontan Dam & Reservoir, and the Stillwater Wildlife Refuge.

Videos and discussions are planned to keep travelers informed en route between stops.

Refreshments and lunch will be provided each day.
