Carson City landfill outsider fee lowered as lure

Carson City’s Board of Supervisors gave final approval Thursday to an ordinance amending waste fees for the landfill to allow out-of-county fee breaks for large-scale refuse.

Public Works Director Andy Burnham estimates that the change, though lowering the rate, will attract construction and demolition solid waste from outside Carson City and increase landfill revenue by about $250,000.

The board also finalized the city’s community development block grant program allocations, which were determined earlier but delayed by differing deadlines involving the federal and city governments. The funding, at $378,067, was higher than originally estimated. Recipients, previously chosen, originally had expected to share $326,430.

In addition, the board accepted various grants for criminal justice work.

Included in them was $180,000 for staffing money to help finance the regional gang initiative, which Sheriff Ken Furlong characterized as an effective program.

Also approved were receipt of $15,000 to help enforce underage-drinking laws, $10,000 for the “Keeping It Real” DARE program to combat substance abuse, and $91,000 to assist in the TRI-Net narcotics task force.
