PREP: Carson wrestlers 4-1 at Placer

AUBURN, Calif. — Carson High’s wrestling team compiled a 4-1 record at the 12-team Placer Duals Saturday.The Senators lost 39-35 to host Placer, and then reeled off four straight wins. CHS beat River City 69-12, Capital Christian 70-18, Paradise 49-24 and Sutter 42-30. Carson, however didn’t medal.“Overall it was a good meet,” coach Tim McCarthy said. “We were concerned after the meet against Spanish Springs (55-8 loss). We were flat against Placer. It just took us a little bit of time to wake up.“That first match we were winning a number of bouts and ended up losing those. The last match was our best.”Four wrestlers — Kyle Sharp, Dominic Kinder, Brady O’Keefe and Jordan Luhrs — finished with 5-0 records. Six others — Caden Lehman, Sammy Mercado, Cole McCarthy, Nicholas Lani, Colby Brown and Brady Rivera — lost just once.JV WRESTLINGCunningham, Wadsworth win region titlesRENO — Alex Cunningham and Tristain Wadsworth won championships at the JV regional tournament at McQueen on Saturday.Wadsworth won at 138 and Cunningham won at 145. Jon Artz was second at 126, Anthony Estrada was third at 132 and Jeremiah Abbott was third at 145. Nathan White was fourth at 182.JC SOFTBALLWNC SWEPTHENDERSON — Western Nevada College’s softball team dropped two games to open the 2013 season on Friday, and then lost two more on Saturday.Central Arizona beat WNC 6-3 and then the Wildcats were knocked off by Yavapai, 7-2.In the loss to Central Arizona, Sydney Darby went 3-for-4 with an RBI and Andrea Lee went 2-for-4 and drove in two runs.It was a 4-3 game until the seventh when Central scored twice and WNC was unable to answer.In the loss to Yavapai, WNC led 2-0 thanks to a run-scoring infield out by Darby and a homer by Darby. Yavapai scored five in the fifth and two in the sixth.In the Saturday opener, WNC lost to South Mountain 13-5. South Mountain scored the bulk of their runs late in the game.Alia Cox led WNC with two hits, while Heather Sempton, Tori Crowell, Alisha Nielsen and Madison Gonzalez. Glendale knocked off WNC 8-7 in the second Saturday contest.WNC led 4-0 after its first at-bat, but Glendale rallied for five runs.Six of WNC’s seven runs came on homers. Darby had a three-run homer, Tara McCarthy had a two-run shot and Jen Rechel added a solo homer. Nielsen contributed three hits.VARSITY GIRLS BASKETBALLFalcons lose by 1COLEVILLE — Sierra Lutheran lost a hard-fought battle 28-27 on the road Saturday.The undermanned Falcons played tough but lost on a jumper with 10 seconds left.The Falcons were led by Sabrina Ronato’s eight points and Natalie Echeverria’s six.The Falcons travel to Smith Valley on Tuesday and host Silver Stage on Wednesday.Yerington edges DaytonYERINGTON — Despite a 14-point fourth quarter, the Dust Devils dropped a thriller, 40-37, on Saturday.“It was a nailbiter,” Dayton coach Cliff Serawop said. “We had our chances. We couldn’t find the bottom of the net. We had several open looks.”Dayton went 5-for-14 at the line, which is huge when you lose by three.Maribel Ledezma led Dayton with 12, while Cheyenne Strong and Destinee Serawop added six.VARSITY BOYS BASKETBALLYerington handles DaytonYERINGTON — Yerington outscored Dayton 38-15 in the second half to roll to a 67-38 win on Saturday.Jessie Evans led the way with 20 points, while Joey Doyle added seven.
