Carson City board hears about plan for new law enforcement substation

Carson City's Board of Supervisors reviewed a plan to house a new Nevada Highway Patrol substation with the local Sheriff's Department, then in a separate action approved receiving a grant to dispose of drugs.

Sheriff Ken Furlong said the Thursday morning substation report was based on a lengthy conversation and would allow "one-stop shopping for the public" on some public-safety matters.

Highway Patrol Chief Troy Abney said the move would function as "a force multiplier" at times. He said that before he came to Nevada 10 months ago, he had experience with a similar setup in California.

"The results were outstanding," Abney said.

Furlong later said only a few troopers would be at his offices. Most of the 20 troopers would patrol outside the city and funnel through the city's department offices at times.

Supervisors voted without dissent to accept a grant of $100,495 from the Nevada Department of Public Safety for the purchase of equipment to destroy drugs. The equipment would be at the Carson City Public Works building on Butti Way.

"This is a really big deal," Furlong said. He added that his department disposes of about a ton of drugs each year. Other jurisdictions also might use the equipment, he said.
