Senators Steele a win at Hug

RENO — Carson High’s boys basketball team evened its record at 2-2 with a 62-50 victory over Hug on Tuesday night.

Carson is 3-1 overall and 1-0 in league heading into the opening round of the Rail City Tournament today. Carson plays McQueen at 5 p.m. today and Lowry at 3 Thursday.

“I thought we played well,” Carson coach Carlos Mendeguia said. “We executed our game plan well. Hug is a good offensive rebounding team, and we worked on hitting the boards. I think they got only one or two big offensive rebounds.

“Five games in five days. Everybody is in the same boat. We all had games Tuesday.”

Point guard Kyle Steele led the offense with 13 points followed by Cameron Price, Jared Rooker and Alan Cohen with 10 apiece. Asa Carter chipped in seven points.

Dayton edges Lovelock

DAYTON — Austin Fletcher and Bernardo Macias scored 13 points apiece to lead the Dust Devils to a 44-38 non-league win over Lovelock Tuesday night.

The win puts Dayton’s record at 5-1 entering its league opener Dec. 20 against Sparks.

Coach Jason Santos said it was Dayton’s best defensive game of the year.

“It was good defense by both teams,” Santos said. “We went from a 2-2-1 to a 2-3 most of the time on made baskets and used man after missed shots. Both were pretty effective. Lovelock has a lot of kids who can shoot and handle the ball, so I was pretty happy with the defense.”

Steve Thompson also reached double figures with 11 and Julio Meza scored five.

Sierra Lutheran 70, Ex. Christian 58

RENO — Jared Hamilton (21), Michael Patrick (20) and Nick Walker (18) combined for 59 points as the Falcons won their season opener on the road.

Hamilton also had six rebounds, eight assists and five steals. Sierra Lutheran plays at Tonopah on Saturday.

VARSITY GIRLS

Carson 56, Hug 13

RENO — Madison Preston and Gina Peacock combined for 25 points to lead the Senators to an easy win in their league opener.

Carson, 4-1 overall and 1-0 in league, hosts Reno at 2 p.m. Saturday.

Preston led the scoring with 14 in about a half, and Peacock added 11 in a little over two quarters. The teams played with a running clock for approximately the final 11 minutes of the game.

Carly Bachmann added nine and Ivy Pembrook scored six. The Senators played without guard Savannah Smith, who has a concussion. Her status is day-to-day, according to coach Nate Tolbert.

“We played very well defensively,” Tolbert said. “We pressured them throughout the first quarter and got up by 20 (24-4). We sat back and worked on our man-to-man and zone defenses.”

Niaya Lewis scored 10 of Hug’s 13 points.

Lovelock 51, Dayton 19

DAYTON — Melissa Gonzales scored 19 points to lead Lovelock to an easy win, spoiling Dayton’s season-opening game.

Dayton returns to action Dec. 20 at home against Sparks and Dec. 21 at home against Lowry.

Dayton actually led 5-4 early, but Lovelock ended the half by scoring 23 of the next 24 points en route to a 28-6 lead at the half.

“We competed early (for six minutes),” said first-year coach Ben Halverson. “They confused us a little bit by switching defenses a lot. It was our first game and it was their fifth I think. It’s going to get better. We’re young and learning a new system. We had a lot of mental mistakes.”

Angela Sikora led Dayton with 12 points.

Sierra Lutheran 49, Ex. Christian 8

RENO — Cali Benton scored 13 points and Amy Westre added 10 points and grabbed eight rebounds to lead the Falcons to an easy win over Excel Christian Tuesday afternoon.

Westre also pulled down eight rebounds. Grace Bonafede scored six points and pulled down 12 rebounds.

JV BASKETBALL

Carson girls 59, Hug 27

RENO — Serena Miller scored 20 points to lead Carson to an easy victory over the host Hawks on Tuesday night.

Carson is now 4-0 heading into Saturday’s 12:45 p.m. home game against Reno.

Andrea Maffei and Gigi Demera added eight points for the Senators and Brianna Alvarado chipped in seven points.

Carson boys 60, Hug 20

Tez Allen scored 14 points and Greg Wallace added 10 to lead the Senators to an easy win.

FRESHMAN BASKETBALL

Squaw Valley boys 51, Sierra Lutheran 35

Squaw Valley ruined Sierra Lutheran’s first-ever freshman game with a 16-point win Tuesday afternoon.

Tyler Waite and Steven Flanagan led Sierra Lutheran with 10 and eight points, respectively, and Jake Cummings added seven.

Dayton boys 5th at Wooster

Dayton went 1-2 at the Wooster Freshman tournament over the weekend. Carson Crosby scored 26 points in three games and was all-tournament. Dayton’s only win came over Fernley, 43-37.

Carson girls 38, Hug 15

Josie Share scored 12 points to lead the undefeated Senators to their fourth straight victory.

Janae Steele contributed eight and Anya Woodbury seven. Carson hosts Reno at 11 a.m. Saturday.

Carson boys 52, Hug 29

Bryce Moyle scored 10 points to lead Carson to an easy win over Hug Tuesday at Morse Burley Gym.

Brandon Gagnon complemented Moyle with nine points, and Sevon Mandoki and Geraet Raun added eight.
