Obituary: William “Bill” Luther Rishel

September 30, 1921 - November 21, 2013

On November 21, 2013, at his residence in Carson City, Bill’s loving spirit passed from his earthly home through the door welcoming him to his new heavenly home. He was born September 30, 1921 in San Francisco, California to Meigh Luther Rishel and William Henry Rishel. Shortly after graduation from Hayward High School in 1940 his National Guard unit was called to active duty. Bill later became an Aviation Cadet in the U.S. Army Air Corps, and after graduation he served his country as a fighter pilot on active duty in the Pacific Theater during WW II, flying the B-25 and his favorite, the P-38.

In the following years Bill was stationed at various U.S. bases as a pilot and meteorologist, as well as serving overseas in the Panama Canal Zone, Peru, and Guam, M.I., where he met, and on February 3, 1956 married, Joan Schultz, his faithful and loving wife of over 57 years. After 21 years of service, Bill retired in 1961 as Captain, USAF and later attended San Jose State University, California, receiving his Teaching Certifcate in 1964. He then taught 20 years at Petaluma Senior High School, retiring in 1985, and has been a resident of Carson City since 1992. Bill loved flying, his Gold Wing Aspencade motorcycle, downhill skiing, snow shoeing, hiking, and SCUBA and free diving for abalone; in

later years he enjoyed bowling with the Senior League at Carson Lanes.

Bill is survived by his wife Joan and daughter, Robbi Rishel. He was a wonderful, brave, loving and Christian man and will be greatly missed by his family and many friends. Bill was a member of Shepherd of the Sierra Lutheran Church in Carson City, and a memorial service will be held there on December 6, 2013 at 11:00 a.m., followed by a military honors graveside ceremony in the Veterans’ Section of Lone Mountain Cemetery in Carson City at 1:00 o’clock that same day. Arrangements are by Carson City Cremation.
