NV Energy Foundation hands out $1.2 million in grants

The NV Energy Foundation contributed more than $1.2 million to organizations statewide during the second quarter of 2012.

Northern Nevada organizations receiving grants included the Food Bank of Northern Nevada, Girl Scouts of the Sierra Nevada, Western Nevada College Foundation, The Nature Conservancy and the Boys & Girls Clubs of Elko.

Each quarter the foundation contributes to local nonprofit organizations focused in philanthropic areas in both Northern and Southern Nevada. For more information go to nvenergy.com/community.

JOIN certified to offer national assessment test

Job Opportunities in Nevada is now the first certified training and testing site in Nevada to administer the National Work Readiness Credential assessment.

The test is a national standards based assessment for entry level workers to provide a universal, transferable, and national standard for work readiness.

Servpro's Allen attends convention

John Allen of Servpro of Carson City, Douglas County, and South Lake Tahoe joined fellow franchise owners at Servpro's 43rd annual national convention. The convention was held at the Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin Resort in Orlando, Fla., in June.

Servpro specializes in disaster cleanup, restoration and remediation services. The keynote speaker at this year's convention was Nido Qubein, founder and chairman emeritus of the National Speakers Association Foundation. Participants could select from more than 50 workshop sessions led by leaders in the insurance industry who provided updates on a wide range of industry topics.

Milburn joins Farmers Insurance

Kevin Milburn has joined the Farmers Insurance Group in Carson City at 675 Fairview Dr. Ste. 209.

NNDA seeks sponsors for dinner

The Northern Nevada Development Authority is looking for sponsors of its third annual Bubbles, BBQ and Business Recognition dinner on Sept. 20 at the Carson Nugget.

The event, which begins at 5:30 p.m., will recognize six local companies who expanded last year and 19 new primary businesses that chose the Sierra Region as their new home.

Combined, these companies created 763 direct jobs (and another 610 indirect jobs) this past fiscal year, with a first year economic impact of nearly $50 million, NNDA officials said in a press release.

The event is an opportunity for sponsors to meet and greet new business neighbors and show their support for the community.

Yerington resident expands massage service

Yerington resident Laurie Thom has expanded her massage therapy business, Medicine Rock Massage, to Lasting Impressions Salon in downtown Gardnerville.

Thom graduated from the Milan Institute in 2010, started her career at Massage Envy in Carson City, and then opened her own business in Yerington in 2012.

"I specialize in therapeutic, sports, deep tissue massage, and lymphatic drainage," she said, "helping the athlete perform at their best and assist in the relief of chronic pain."

Thom also offers Swedish relaxation and pre-natal massage and hot stones therapy.

Chromalloy wins Navy work

Chromalloy Gas Turbine Corp. of Carson City won a contract worth $98,635 to repair maintain and rebuild turbine engines for the U.S. Navy's Weapon Systems Support center in Mechanicsburg, Pa.
