Aces lose to Fresno

FRESNO, Calif.-Ryan Wheeler collected three hits and drove in a run, but the Reno Aces fell to the Fresno Grizzlies in the series finale Friday night, 5-2, at Chukchansi Park.

The Aces trailed 5-0 through eight frames, before finally breaking up the shutout bid in the ninth thanks to run-scoring singles for Wheeler and Evan Frey. That cut the deficit to three, but Reno would get no closer.

Aces starter Barry Enright exited after just one inning after being struck in the ankle by a comebacker. From there, Reno used five relievers over the next seven frames. Mike DeMark (0-1) took the loss, surrendering three runs-two earned-on four hits over two innings of work.

The win went to former Aces pitcher and Grizzlies starter Travis Blackley (2-0), who worked seven shutout innings.

The Aces host Sacramento tonight at 6:35 in the first of a four-game series.

Carson hosts track invitational today

The annual Carson High Invitational, featuring nine 4A schools, is scheduled for today.

Douglas, Hug, McQueen, Galena, Damonte Ranch, North Valleys, Wooster and Bishop Manogue join Carson in the 16-team field.

Sierra Lutheran, Gabbs, Excel Christian, North Tahoe, Whittell, Lowry, South Tahoe and Truckee round out the field.

Field events get started at 8:45 a.m. with running events starting at 9.

Carson coach Robert Maw expects his boys team, led by Clint Page, Taylor Bradshaw, Corey Reid, Chance Quilling and Nathan Hazard to fare well.

Maw also had high hopes for his girls squad, but two recent injuries have robbed him of two of his top performers.

Josilyn Daggs suffered an ACL injury during a club soccer practice this week, and will miss the rest of the season.

Freshman Kayla Aikins also will miss the meet after undergoing surgery for an undisclosed medical condition.

Both Daggs and Aikins were valuable relay runners.

Carson still has some solid point scorers in Elena Thurman, Kaitlyn Holmes, Alex Drozdoff, Maddi Saarem and Erika Sosa.
