COMMUNITY SPORTS: Golf tourney set for May 1

The 18th annual Gourmand golf tournament is scheduled to take place on May 1 at Eagle Valley Golf Course.

The four person scramble is sponsored by the Cracker Box, Adele's Restaurant and Js' Old Town Bistro and benefits Carson City's Community Counseling Center.

The $150 entry fee includes golf, tee prizes, a buffet breakfast, prizes and treats along the course and lunch.

You can create your own foursome or sign up as an individual or twosome and be paired up. All skill levels and handicaps are welcome.

Hole sponsorships also are available for local businesses. Inquire at the Cracker Box.

The center serves residents of Carson City, as well as Douglas, Washoe and Lyon counties. The center provides a variety of services and treatments for both individuals and families struggling with chemical dependencies.

Registration ongoing for First Tee of Northern Nevada

Registration is now taking place for the First Tee of Northern Nevada. The First Tee is offering junior golf programs at Eagle Valley, Empire Ranch, and Silver Oak golf courses.

Class sessions begin April 3 and new classes are offered each month through September. Cost is $80 per session; each session includes 6-8 lessons. Financial assistance is available. Golf equipment is also provided for participants who do not have their own clubs.

Special spring break camps also are offered April 18-21 at both Eagle Valley and Silver Oak golf courses.

Registration can be completed online at www.tftnn.org. Class schedule and registration forms may also be downloaded from the website or may be requested by calling 851-2332. Classes are available for beginner to advanced youth golfers ages 7-18 years old.

Golf programs with The First Tee include a life skills curriculum that is taught through golf lessons, drills, and on-course play. Life skills taught include interpersonal communication, self-management, goal-setting, and resilience skills.

Carson Sierra Youth Football League signups

Carson SYFL will hold sign-ups for football and cheerleading from 12 -4 p.m. at Carson Pizza Factory, 3120 Highway 50 East. The signups will take place on the following Saturdays: March 26, April 9 and April 30.

Carson SYFL, entering its third year, features Nevada high school football rules on 100 yard fields. Kids play with their peers the same age, ages 6 to 14 (not in high school).

Registration cost $175. Payment plans and financial aid available to those who qualify.

First practice is Monday, July 25, with the first game on Saturday, Aug. 13.

Two tied for Highway 50 lead

Dayton Inn and O.G. Squeeze remain tied for first place in the Highway 50 Division of the Carson City chapter of the American Poolplayers Association.

The teams have 43 points, five ahead of Pocket Puppies.

Bill Howard leads the 6-7 tier with 10 points. Shawn Wilson from Dayton Inn leads the 4-5 tier with 26 points, two ahead of Gregory Theis of Pocket Puppies. Wilson is three ahead of teammate Tommy Thompson and Randolph Polson of Slidin' Clyde's. James Fowler III of Dayton Inn leads the 2-3 tier with 23 points, three ahead of Joseph Seng II of Slidin' Clyde's and Barbara Burton of Collateral Damage.

In the Mosconi Division, AltF4 and Unintentional Defense are tied with 37 points. The teams are three ahead of Big Dogs.

Jack Parish of Unintentional Defense leads the 6-7 tier with 30 points, six points ahead of Robert Haddix, also of Unintentional Defense. Joshua Stewart of AltF4, is in first in the 4-5 tier with 22 points. Teammate Christopher Skelley and Eric Richards of SHR are tied for second with 20 points. Josiah Toledo of Rack Fink leads the 2-3 tier with 25 points, six ahead of Jerrika Wendt from Jerry's Kids.

Squeeze Play leads Jerry's Shooters and The Spoke by one point in the Black Widow Division.

Don Allred leads the 6-7 tier with 37 points. In the 4-5 tier, Eric Dereng leads by 10 points over Mike Snoddy of Cues Yer Daddy. Rachel Hurt of Cues Yer Daddy and Caren Adkins from the Spoke are tied for the lead in the 2-3 tier with 19 points.

In the Comstock Division, Yabba Dabba Cue leads Twisted Stix With Attitudes and All Work & No Play by 20 points.

Alex Gutierrez of Dean's Machine leads Don Allred of Rack Busters, 28-25. In the 4-5 tier, Jeff Cordova of All Work & No Play leads Christopher Skelley, 31-30. Caren Adkins of Tied & Soldiered leads the 1-3 tier with 29 points, eight better than Jerry O'Dell of Rack Busters.
