PREPS: Garcia, Sharp medal at SNC

RENO - Carson High's dynamic duo of Nico Garcia and Kyle Sharp won medals at the Sierra Nevada Classic which concluded Thursday at the Reno Livestock Events Center.

Garcia, who placed seventh as a junior in 2010, finished fifth in the prestigious event. Sharp, a sophomore, took eighth place. He was seeded 10th entering the event.

Garcia started the day by being pinned by Nikko Reyes of Clovis-West, but then pinned Luke Brewer of Bret Harte and beat No. 6 Ryan Shean of Grants Pass 5-0. Chester's Wesley Ruffer, the fifth seed, pinned Garcia. The CHS standout closed out his tournament with a 6-2 win over Jacob Childs from Sam Barlow-Oregon.

"He wrestled awesome; another great tournament," coach Tim McCarthy said. "I look at kids that were at about the same level as Nico last year, and he's gone up a notch. He's transitioning into a college wrestler."

Sharp started his day with a pin against an opponent from Paso Robles and then an 8-2 win over Spring Creek's Sheldon Davis. He was pinned by top-seeded Casey Coulter of Grants Pass and then lost to fifth-seeded Devon Lyle of Liberty-Brentwood, 7-3.

"Coming into this tournament, we thought that Kyle was medal material. He did a good job."

Carson returns to action a week from Saturday at the Granada Mat Invitational in Livermore, Calif.
