Students make pottery for Run Ed Run fundraiser

Douglas High School students of Kelley Yost's pottery classes are making 84 medals to be awarded at the Douglas County Education Foundation's Run Ed Run fundraiser on Oct. 10.

Carefully handcrafted by students, first-, second-, and third-place medals will be given out in each group for male and female categories in the 5k and 10k races.

The foundation routinely awards grants to teachers in all 11 schools in Douglas County. In 2008, Douglas High pottery classes received a $650 grant from the organization that was used to purchase glass stringers, cutting boards and pliers for glass fusing and slumping projects.

"Whether they know it or not, the students are probably using stuff from the Ed Foundation grant," Yost said.

The foundation gives away about $20,000 a year in the form of grants.

To kick off this year's Run Ed Run race, organizers are hosting a social event and silent auction, with a goal to raise $10,000, at Indigo Restaurant & Bar in Minden Village on Oct. 9.

Those who sign up for the race before Sept. 25 get a free running shirt. Participants are encouraged to come and walk, run, or stroll. The school showing the most spirit on race day will win $1,000.

There will also be family events complete with bounce houses, fire trucks, a helicopter, health and fitness booths, and food and activities.
