Annette Suverkrup

A private service will be held for native Nevadan and former Record-Courier owner Annette Suverkrup, 87, who died Sept. 6, 2010, at Renown Regional Medical Center in Reno.

Born March 10, 1923, in Wells to Isidore Regis Leighton and Agnes McCulloch, she graduated from Wells High School, attended business college in Southern California, then attended the University of Nevada, Reno, majoring in journalism. She was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta.

She married her husband U.S. Army veteran John W. Suverkrup in 1944, and they moved the same year to Gardnerville, where they purchased The Record-Courier from longtime owner Bert Selkirk. The couple were active in many community organizations and members of the Methodist church. They were publishers until they sold the newspaper and moved to Reno in 1960.

Mrs. Suverkrup was preceded in death her husband of 58 years; siblings Robert S. Leighton of Reno, Donald M. Leighton of Winnemucca, and Rosemary Stowell of Reno and Vacaville. She is survived by daughters Leigh (Chuck) Burton of Ventura, Calif., Jill (Franco) de Molina of Peoria, Ariz.; two granddaughters Tanya Jenkins and Francesca Mast; five great-grandchildren Chantel, Jessica, Kimberly, Jordan and Cormac, and four nieces and nephews.

Cremation and inurnment will be at Mountain View Cemetery. Donations in her name may be made to The Salvation Army, or the American Parkinson's Disease Association.
