Plans for a casino and bakery in a nearly 100-year-old building in downtown Minden have been submitted to the Douglas County building department, according to project spokesperson Scott Tate.
"We're definitely interested in moving forward with the project," Tate said. "But we don't have a definite timeline."
Owner of the Nugget casinos in Fernley, Fallon and Silver Springs, Tate partnered with longtime Minden residents Marlena and Robb Hellwinkel in what will amount to a vast remodel of the former automotive facility known as C.O.D. Garage, to be renamed C.O.D. Casino.
Built in 1911, and vacant since 2003, the garage was one of the oldest operating commercial garages in the United States. It also holds the record for the oldest AAA touring service in Nevada and one of the oldest Chevrolet and Buick franchises in the country.
In 2008, county commissioners approved zoning changes and variances for a 14,303-square-foot casino, 3,540-square-foot Schat's Bakery and another 4,000 square feet for a museum and retail/day spa.
"The scope of the project is still accurate," Tate said. "All the elements of the project remain constant, but the timeline is unknown at this time. We have completed plans. A lot of due diligence has been conducted."
