Tigers place 29 on postseason honors lists

Coaches around Northern Nevada released their fall sports postseason honors teams this week.

While football will not be released until the state championship game in the first week of December, Douglas High had an exceptionally strong showing across the board in the remaining sports.

Out of seven fall sports not including football, Douglas had five players named as their league or region's Player of the Year.

They placed 29 athletes and one coach on the postseason honors lists.

Tennis standouts Amelia Ritger and James TenBroeck were named Northern 4A Regional Player of the Year in their respective sports while golf standout Bethany Wurster was named both the Sierra League Player of the Year and the Northern 4A Regional Player of the Year.

Ritger won her third regional title in four years and finished her high school career with the highest winning percentage in school history.

TenBroeck won his second consecutive regional title and boasted a 45-match unbeaten streak before falling at the first round of state.

Wurster blazed through the regular season winning most of her tournaments and her fourth Sierra League individual title before claiming her third regional title in four years.

She signed to play for Oregon State last week.

Douglas fared just as well in the team sports as senior Shannon Dugan (volleyball) and junior Tia Lyons (girls' soccer) earned Player of the Year awards in their sports for their play during the season.

Dugan led Douglas to its first state title in 12 years and its first regional title in nine years. She posted 351 kills, 63 aces and 286 service points -- all team-leading marks -- to go with 242 digs and 39 blocks.

Lyons had a team-leading 22 goals to go with a team-leading 16 assists on her way leading Douglas to its second-consecutive regional and state titles. She was named the league's Offensive Player of the Year.
