Golden Nugget open for business as owner recovers

Golden Nugget Automotive is open for business while owner Mike Schiller is recovering from a May 14 automobile accident, according to his brother Ron.

"We see improvement every day," Ron Schiller said Thursday. "What they're saying about his condition won't change, but we've seen definite improvement. He has all of his limbs and everything is still there, it's just swollen."

According to the sheriff's office, a witness said the vehicle, a Shelby Cobra, began to fish tail and ran into a driveway. He said the car spun in the air, he heard two loud noises and then silence. Schiller was ejected 20 feet from the vehicle, according to reports.

A deputy who responded to the call said Schiller had massive head and facial trauma, but was conscious after the accident.

Ron Schiller said he and Schiller's sons are working at the shop.

"I'm not going home very soon," he said. "The boys know the community and I'm learning the business."

Ron Schiller said he felt Mike Schiller was in good hands.

"This is the finest hospital I've ever been in," he said of Renown Regional Medical Center. "I live in Des Moines and I've been in hospitals all over the Midwest. This is one of the best. The staff is absolutely outstanding."

He also had high praise for the community support.

"We've had lots of phone calls from the religious community," he said. "We love what's going on."

An account for donations to the Schiller family to help with expenses has been established at Wells Fargo. The account number is 9553020299.
