State sues Vegas district to enforce money grab

The state of Nevada is suing a Las Vegas district to obtain $62 million needed to balance the budget.

The Clean Water Coalition has been saving money for the last several years to provide funding for a system to collect and move treated sewage from the Las Vegas Valley treatment facilities to Lake Mead, according to a suit filed today in the Nevada Supreme Court.

The coaltion collects money from the treatment plants. However, it was announced in early 2010 that the coalition wasn't going to move forward with the system because of advances in sewage treatment technology and reduced need.

When the Nevada Legislature held their special session they approved a law transferring the money to the state.

However, on March 11, the coalition's management board held a public meeting where they voted to sue to prevent the transfer required by the Legislature.

The next day, the coalition filed suit in Clark County District Court seeking to prevent the legislative money grab.
