Sporting opportunities abound on Carson Valley Days weekend

Carson Valley Days weekend has become somewhat of a landing point for summer sporting events over the years.

This weekend's activities kicked off with the Carson Valley Days Golf Tournament at the Carson Valley Golf Course on Thursday.

The following is a roundup of this weekend's sporting events:

The 31st running of the Carson Valley Days Outlaw Softball Tournament at Lampe Park starts at 8 a.m. Saturday and concludes with the championship round sometime around 3 p.m. Sunday.

Sixteen teams are scheduled to play in the double-elimination bracket.

The tournament started when the Carson Valley Outlaws men's softball team was looking to draw opponents from around the region for qualifiers.

"We just started doing it so we could go play all over the place," said tournament organizer Tim Jacobsen. "The tournament just kind of continued after we quit playing. It became kind of the thing to do. If it's Carson Valley Days, you go play softball."

The Partnership of Community Resources will host its third annual 5K/10K Walk, Jog, Run event Saturday to kick off the Carson Valley Days Parade.

The 10K begins at 7:45 a.m. at the Douglas County Senior Center while the 5K begins at 8 a.m. at the south end of Lampe Park.

Both races will end at Lampe and the parade will start at 9 a.m.

Registration is $30 ($40 on race day) and $5 for youth 12 and under.

An optional pre-race packet pickup will be held today from 4 to 8 p.m. at Pizza Barn in Gardnerville.

There will be $25 gift certificates to Big 5 Sporting Goods given to the top overall male and female finishers in the 10K event.

Prizes will also be raffled off to event entrants.

To register, visit www.active.com, www.partnership-resource.org or call 782-8611.

The Douglas County Parks & Recreation Department will host its second-annual 4-on-4 Grass Volleyball Tournament Sunday at Lampe Park on Field 1.

Sign-in starts at 8 a.m. and the matches start at 9 a.m.

Cost is $20 per person. Register at the recreation department at 1327 Waterloo Lane.

Call 782-9828 or e-mail abraun@co.douglas.nv.us for more information.

The Alta Alpina Cycling Club will host the Riding the Wild Sierra event, which includes a Build Your Own Challenge option, on Saturday.

Riders can choose from one to six passes around the Markleeville area. Cyclists can pick and choose whatever their particular appetite might be to challenge themselves.

Distances range from 30-160 miles with 3,600-16,700 feet of climbing as part of the options.

Do one pass, do them all, or mix it up.

There are four separate options for the event: the Kid Carson Challenge, a family ride aimed at local individuals and families along with the friends and family of cyclists participating in one of the other rides; the Wild Sierra Century, three mountain passes with just over 100 miles of climbing; the 8-Pass Challenge, one of 20 California Triple Crown events in which experienced endurance cyclists ride approximately 200 miles in one day; and the Build Your Own Challenge, where each participant sets a personal goal based on their individual skills and ability to ride one to six mountain passes.
