Driver denies he'd been drinking

A 29-year-old Topaz Ranch Estates man was charged with driving under the influence after deputies found him early Sunday passed out in his vehicle in the middle of the road, with lights on and the engine running, holding a beer.

A Douglas County sheriff's deputy came upon Ryan Vangorder's vehicle at 1:36 a.m. in the middle of the access driveway to Roberts Drive as he was patrolling the area of Highway 208.

He said Vangorder was resting his head on the window opening of the driver's window holding a bottle of beer.

He said he couldn't wake the suspect, so he called paramedics. They were unable to get a response until a paramedic grabbed the beer Vangorder was holding in his right hand and he woke up.

Despite Vangorder's condition and the strong odor of alcohol emitting from his breath, the suspect denied he had anything to drink.

He was unable to complete a field sobriety test. A preliminary breath test indicated a blood-alcohol content of .201, more than twice the legal limit of .08 for driving.

He was taken to Douglas County Jail.
