5-month-old hospitalized with fractures, burns

The parents of a five-month-baby boy were jailed Sunday on $25,000 bail each after the infant was hospitalized for what an emergency room doctor said looked like "ongoing child abuse."

According to court reports, a doctor at Carson Tahoe Regional Medical Center who examined the baby on Sunday said the child had fractures of his skull, ribs, and arms, and burns on his buttocks and the heels and bottoms of his feet.

His ears and face also were bruised.

Jeremy Taylor, 28, and Marie Youmans, 27, of the Gardnerville Ranchos, were jailed on suspicion of child abuse.

They are to be arraigned on Wednesday in East Fork Justice Court when they will hear the charges against them.

The baby was transferred to Renown Regional Medical Center in Reno.

Deputies were contacted by the hospital after the infant's parents and grandparents brought the baby in for what they said was a rash.

The physician said the fractures were in various stages of healing and could be one week to one month old.

According to reports, the grandmother told deputies she had been concerned about the baby's welfare for months. She said he appeared to have bruising around his face and "didn't look right. He was pale and pasty, and had scratches and bruising on his knees, elbows, cheeks and eyes."

She told deputies she and the baby's grandfather insisted the parents bring the child to the hospital.

She said on July 7, the parents took the baby to his doctor who said he was malnourished and required medication and an improved diet.

The grandmother also said she had observed Youmans allegedly drop the baby after she picked him up from his crib.

Taylor refused to talk with deputies, according to reports.

Youmans said she had primary responsibility for the baby's care but denied that she or her husband injured the infant. She said she didn't know what happened to her son.
