Martin Montgomery of the Red Hoop Drum Group said this weekend's round dance is a memorial to tribal singers like his late father Larry Plimpton, and is a way to bring people together.

"It's a way to give back to the community, share songs and feed everybody," Montgomery said.

The Red Hoop Drum Group and their families are the coordinators of the annual Red Hoop Round Dance, 5 p.m. to 1 a.m. Friday and Saturday, at the Dresslerville Gym.

The round dance has been a one-night event, but because of its popularity - 900-1,100 attended last year - organizers are having two nights of round dances. The event begins each night with a free dinner of traditional foods before dancing and singing.

Montgomery said this round dance is not solely Washoe, Paiute, or Shoshone, but an intertribal northern style. He said all are welcome to attend the free event.

Round dances are described as a time when the community can get together during cold winter nights.

"It's a time to share food and rekindle friendships, and make new ones. A round dance is a time to share and learn new songs, hold hands and dance and be thankful for our lives and things the creator has given us, and a time for courtship and love," Montgomery said.

Besides community members from Carson City, Alpine County and Dresslerville, people come from Canada, Montana, Utah, New Mexico and Arizona to attend round dances. Invited singers sing in the traditional Nevada style and in Red Hoop's more modern style. Songs are in English and in tribal languages.

The 13-member Red Hoop group goes on the road to sing and drum at round dances around the country. Group members range in age from 8 to 52.

Dance organizers appreciate the support of community partners like Carson Valley Inn, Starbucks and Walmart that help make the event a success every year.

There are hourly 50/50 drawings and raffles for Pendleton blankets and jackets, handmade star quilts, beaded items and gift cards. Also included are crafts vendors, and sweatshirt and T-shirt sales. Hot dogs and burgers will be available for purchase.

The round dance is 5 p.m. to 1 a.m. Friday and Saturday at the Dresslerville Gym on Watasheamu Road. Information, Martin Montgomery, (775) 450-9655.
