Ash Wednesday marks beginning of Lent

Staff Reports

Christ Presbyterian Church's Ash Wednesday service is Wednesday, Feb. 17, at 6:30 p.m. Ash Wednesday marks the first day of Lent, a season of repentance and reflection, which prepares us for Christ's Resurrection on Easter Sunday. Everyone in the local community is invited to join us for this meaningful service. The church is located at 1436 S. Industrial Way in Gardnerville.

Ash Wednesday gets its name from the practice of placing ashes on the foreheads of the faithful as a sign of repentance. As we are reminded in Genesis 3:19, "Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return." Ash Wednesday always occurs 46 days before Easter (or 40 days not counting Sundays). It falls on a different date each year because it depends on Easter, which is April 4 this year.
