There are just a few days left for you to enter the August photo contest. Send us your best photo of what August in Douglas County looks like to you by 4 p.m. Aug. 31. You can take a photo in to the Gardnerville museum or you can e-mail it to the address below. Our judges will pick a winner which will be announced in next week's column.
For those of you who like to really plan ahead, we have great news about this winter's melodrama. First, set aside the dates of Feb. 4, 5 and 6 for the performances. John and Mary Stephans are co-producers and Maggie Allen will be directing. We don't know if they have cast the production as yet, but stay tuned, as they say. We'll let you know the moment we hear anything new to report.
The next in the lecture series is 7 p.m. Sept. 9. Dennis Cassinelli will be speaking on how the Douglas Country region and some of the characters from this area participated in the Comstock boom. Tickets are free for Douglas County Historical Society members and only $3 for non-members.
Meanwhile, that Sept. 11 flea market will be here before you know it. You can reserve your 10-by-10 foot space in advance for only $10. Applications are available at the Gardnerville museum or at www.historicnevada.org. The flea market will run from 8 a.m. until 3 p.m. Everyone is welcome to set up a booth to sell or come on out to shop.
The final Thirsty Third Thursday will be Sept. 16 this year. The theme will be Hawaiian. The registration booth will be at the Gardnerville museum. The walk starts at 4:30 p.m. and goes until 8 p.m. Come celebrate downtown in Hawaiian style.
The historical society has become a participant in the Blue Star Museums Program. This is a program that offers free admission to museums for all active duty military personnel and their families through Labor Day, Sept. 6. This program offers these families a chance to visit museums this summer when many will have limited resources and limited time to be together. Though the time left is short, all military personnel and their families are welcome at our two museums.

Remember, DCHS and its two museums in Gardnerville and Genoa don't receive any regular state or county funding. It's up to our members and friends to help keep our doors open.
