Fire burning south of Markleeville

About 70 firefighters are battling a 50-acre blaze in the Carson Iceberg Wilderness south of Markleeville.

The Wolf Creek fire is burning in the Humboldt-Toiyabe Forest north of the Murray Canyon Trail, about six miles south of Wolf Creek, according to spokesman Todd Chaponot of the Sierra Front Interagency Dispatch Center.

There are some structures within two miles of the fire, but it's burning slowly and the weather is calm, Chaponot said. The fire is burning lodgepole pine, and the topography is medium.

The fire was set by a lightning strike, possibly during the July 25 thunderstorm and has been smoldering. A crew responded to a report of smoke in the vicinity on Tuesday night.

There have been no report of road or trail closures as a result of the fire.
