Photo club winners announced

Staff Reports

A cow, a newborn calf and photographer Lisa Minter are all winners. Minter took first place in the Carson Valley Photo Club's monthly competition with her picture of the minutes-old calf. She titled her winning shot "The Lucky One."

Minter said she waited several hours for the birth, then realized the mother was in trouble. "I waited all day, then it came out only about two feet," she recalled.

Minter called the ranch owner, who called a veterinarian. He decided to have the cow saved, but both animals survived. When it was finally born, "it just held up its little head and looked around," she said.

Her picture shows the dripping wet and mud-covered newborn taking one of its first breaths.

The contest theme was "signs of spring." Second place went to Jeanette Hill's photo of cherry blossoms. Kathy Port's picture of a mustang and its foal won third.

Club member Chuck Diephuis will talk about black-and-white photography at the next meeting, May 11. The contest theme for the month will be "water."

The club welcomes new members - amateurs to professionals. It meets the second Tuesday each month at the Carson Valley United Methodist Church, 1375 Centerville Lane, Gardnerville. Information, club president Doug Dill, 783-4388.
