Baseball: Wildcats continue winning ways; sweep Eastern Utah

PRICE, Utah - Western Nevada College's baseball team tuned up for its showdown with conference leading Southern Nevada by sweeping College of Eastern Utah 2-1 and 6-1 Saturday afternoon.


The sweep put WNC at 18-6 in Scenic West Athletic Conference play and 30-9 overall. Eastern Utah dropped to 6-18 and 12-25.


"It's pretty good when you win four in a row on the road," WNC coach D.J. Whittemore said. "We did a nice job playing the game the right way."


In the opener, WNC took a 1-0 lead in the second on a RBI double by Kyle Conwell. Eastern Utah tied the game at 1 in the third.


WNC threatened in the 7th, but Trevor Goff was thrown out by the EU centerfielder trying to score from second on Eric Maupin's single.


Pat McMeel doubled in the ninth and came around to score on a hit batsmen and back-to-back walks.


Jordan Lewis went the first 4.2 innings, striking out six and allowing three hits. Jeremy Gendlek, the winner, threw 3.1 innings. He fanned five and walked two while allowing two hits.


In the second game, WNC had two runs taken away when it batted out of order. The Wildcats battled back and still scored two in the inning. WNC added two more in the fifth and two more in the seventh and final inning.


Andrew Garcia and McMeel each had two hits for WNC, and McMeel also drove in two runs. Goff, Conwell and Maupin drove in a run apiece.


David Carroll worked the first five innings to pick up the win. He allowed one unearned run, fanned three and walked two. Riley Bevill and Kody Gorden finished up with one scoreless inning apiece.


The four-game series with Southern Nevada starts Friday with a doubleheader starting at noon. The double-header on Saturday also starts at noon.


Southern Nevada swept College of Southern Idaho during the weekend to stay three games up on the Wildcats.
