Resorts prepare to close on a high note

It figures to be a great week of skiing and snowboarding at various local ski resorts, with the latest winter storm Sunday night and a week ahead of sunshine and mild temperatures.

Sunday's spring storm dumped more than two feet of snow in some places in the region. Below is a listing of some ski resorts and snowfall totals they reported Monday morning:

• Squaw Valley USA: 8-10 inches of new snow at lower mountain; 14-18 inches of new snow at upper mountain.

• Alpine Meadows: 20 inches of new snow at lower mountain; 31 inches of new snow at upper mountain.

• Heavenly Ski Area: 18-19 inches of new snow.

• Tahoe Donner Downhill Ski Area: 17-25 inches of new snow.

• Diamond Peak Ski Resort: 14 inches of new snow.

Sunny skies and mild temperatures, with highs in the lower 50s, are expected into the weekend, according to the National Weather Service in Reno. There is a chance of snow Saturday and Sunday.

Below are the projected closing dates for area ski resorts this season.

Sunday, April 11

Boreal Ski Resort expects to close April 11, with night rides ending April 3, according to its website.

In Incline Village, Diamond Peak Ski Resort projects to close Sunday, April 11.

Homewood Mountain Resort expects to close April 11, as do Tahoe Donner Cross Country and Tahoe Donner Downhill Ski Area.

Royal Gorge Cross Country projects to be open through April 11.

Tahoe Cross Country ski area expects to remain open through April 11 and, if conditions remain good, April 18.

Sunday, April 18

Alpine Meadows resort will conduct full operations until Sunday, April 18. Weather permitting, it will then operate on a Friday-Sunday schedule with one lift open until May 16, according to the Alpine Meadows website.

Mt. Rose Ski Resort projects its closing date will be Sunday, April 18, according to its website.

Northstar-at-Tahoe Resort has also announced on its website that Sunday, April 18, is its projected closing date for the season, as it is for Sierra-at-Tahoe.

Sunday, April 25

Sugar Bowl Ski Resort in Norden will close for the 2009-10 ski season on Sunday, April 25. All operations at the resort in Norden will close that day.

Kirkwood Ski Resort projects Sunday, April 25 as its closing date for this season, according to its website.

Heavenly Lake Tahoe has also projected a closing date of April 25.

Sunday, May 9

Squaw Valley USA projects its closing date as May 9, weather permitting.
