Husband charged in squalor case

The husband of a woman accused of child neglect because of alleged unsafe living conditions in their home was also charged Friday.

Shaun Cox, 29, was charged with one count of contributing to the neglect of a child.

His wife, Tamara Cox, 27, was jailed on $100,000 bail after deputies were called to the Desert Drive residence in Sunridge by a Nevada Highway Patrol officer investigating a hit-and-run report.

A Douglas County sheriff's deputy reported an overwhelming odor of urine and feces when he entered the home. He said the front entry was dirty with dried mud and unknown substances.

He contacted Tamara Cox who showed him where her children, ages 2 through 12, slept. He said the hallway was caked with feces and stained with urine.

The two boys and two girls slept in separate bedrooms so covered with clutter and old food the deputy could not see the floor. He said the sink, toilet and tub in the bathroom were dirty and there were soiled diapers and feces on the floor.

The deputy said the kitchen was overflowing with trash, discarded food and dirty dishes.

Tamara Cox appeared before East Fork Justice Jim EnEarl on Friday. He appointed lawyer Derrick Lopez to represent her. She is charged with one misdemeanor count of contributing to the neglect of a child.

Deputies said the children, ages 2 through 12, appeared healthy. They were taken into custody by their great-grandmother.

Tamara Cox told EnEarl on Friday she is in custody proceedings in district court.

He ordered her to return to court for a hearing Wednesday.
