California state park closure list delayed at least a week

No announcement on the closure of California state parks will be released this week, according to a spokesman for the department.

About 100 California parks could be closed as a budget cutting measure.

The list of those parks was scheduled to be released this week, but California Parks Deputy Director of Communications Roy Stearns said today that has been delayed.

"We're wading through the list, trying to do a good job," he said. "It may come next week, but it's hard to make a prediction."

Stearns said that when the list is ready, the department will issue an alert.

"But it's definitely not going to be ready this week," he said.

California operates 279 state parks, including Grovers Hot Springs and Bodie State Historic Park. In an effort to save $14.2 million, the state is looking at closing more than a third of them.

Lake Tahoe has several state parks that might also be affected, including D.L. Bliss, Ed Z'berg Sugar Pine Point and Emerald Bay.
