What's next with Walmart?

Leave it to Gardnerville to tell Walmart to come back again sometime ... and bring all the information.

While not a resounding "No," members of the Gardnerville Town Board didn't approve the big box store's design review, choosing instead to continue it without the applicant's consent.

Those Valley residents with an opinion have been consistently opposed to Walmart's arrival in Gardnerville.

The big box store poses a threat to Minden and Gardnerville merchants that can't be countered in the same way as the Walmart in north Douglas County was.

That leaves the key question, what next?

Presumably, county staff could still deal with the design review without referring it to a public meeting. With a Sept. 21 deadline, it's possible Gardnerville could still hold a special meeting to address their issues.

Given the number of attorneys at Tuesday's town board meeting representing neighboring property owners, it seems unlikely the decision on design review will go forward without an appeal to a higher board, or even district court.

We salute the members of the Gardnerville Town Board for being willing to take on one of America's commercial behemoths on behalf of its residents.

The next few weeks will tell how effective Gardnerville's Tuesday night action will be in slowing down Walmart. In the meantime, we're rooting for the home team.
