Project seeks veterans' battle stories

Lt. Gov. Brian Krolicki and his staff are looking for Iraq and Afghanistan veterans to participate in an oral history project, "Battle Born: Nevada War Stories."

Based on the tradition of wartime works, the stories will be video- and audio-taped and made available to the public on the lieutenant governor's Web site.

"Battle Born: Nevada War Stories" will be about preparing for battle, surviving in combat and support missions, being fired upon and perhaps wounded, grieving and dealing with the deaths of friends, and coping with the extraordinary stress of military service during wartime, Krolicki said.

"In the almost eight years since the attacks of Sept. 11, American service members have been called to serve multiple tours in a war with at least two fronts," said Krolicki. "Battle Born will be a respectful and fitting tribute to the soldiers, sailors, airmen and marines - and their families - who have given so much of themselves."

The lieutenant governor's office became involved in veterans' issues two years ago when a veteran and West Point graduate Caleb Cage joined the staff.

Cage, senior policy advisor, has articulated the needs, and advocated on behalf of this generation of service members and veterans.

"The Global War on Terrorism has been the defining moment of the generation that currently fills the ranks of the American military," Cage said. "This project will allow my fellow Nevadans to share their individual stories with a much larger audience and allow current and future generations to appreciate these personal perspectives as they apply to the broader issues of war, duty, honor and country."

Staff members, including Cage, are visiting rural communities throughout Nevada to interview veterans.

"Our work in conjunction with the state's economic development and tourism commissions allows us to make regular forays into cities and towns across Nevada," he said. "We are delighted that we can incorporate this important project into our travels."
