Joaquin Orriaga

A memorial Mass is 1 p.m. Tuesday at St. Gall Catholic Church for Joaquin Orriaga, 85, who died Oct. 15, 2009, at Evergreen Care Center in Gardnerville.

Born April 7, 1924, in Irurita, Spain, to Jose and Josefa Jaunsaras Orriaga, he came to the United States in 1951 to herd sheep. He spent the next 33 years working on sheep and cattle ranches in Nevada and California.

Mr. Orriaga retired to Gardnerville in 1994.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Bernardo and sisters Michaela and Josefa.

He is survived by sister Paulina and brother Pacheco of Irurita, Spain; nephews Juan Urreaga of Fairfield, Calif., and Alex Urreaga of South Lake Tahoe; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
