Smoke plume coming from controlled burn

Smoke in Carson Valley appears to be coming from a controlled burn in the Eldorado Forest. The U.S. Forest Service began burning in Van Vleck Meadow on Saturday. The first hints of drift smoke arrived in the Valley on Saturday night, prompting at least one fire investigation above Alpine View.

When the wind picked up from the southwest on Saturday afternoon, it brought a substantial amount of smoke with it.

The burn is located seven miles north of Ice House Reservoir, which is near Kyburz on Highway 50.

There will be a lot more coming from the west on Tuesday when a strong storm arrives in Western Nevada. The system is expected to dump 3-6 inches of precipitation in the upper elevations. Several feet of snow are expected in the high Sierra, mostly above 9,000 feet, according to the National Weather Service.

Snow levels will start at about 7,500 feet on Monday night, but a blast of warm air will send snow levels to 9,000 feet or higher. Forecasters are predicting about an inch of rain in the valleys.
