Volleyball: Damonte to forfeit first half of the season

The Sierra League volleyball season just went wide-open.

KRNV News Channel 4 in Reno is reporting that Damonte Ranch will forfeit the 26 matches they've played so far this season because they've been using an ineligible player.

According to their report, the player in question transferred from Hawaii prior to the year and was granted a temporary guardianship while living with a relative in the area.

The NIAA reportedly does not recognize temporary guardianship, stating instead that in order to establish eligibility, a player must live with a parent or legal guardian.

Damonte was 24-2 heading into the week and 6-1 in league play with their lone loss coming to top-ranked Manogue.

Now, with an 0-7 league record, the Mustangs will have to fight to even make the playoffs.

Douglas' league record went from 6-2 to 7-1, meaning they are suddenly right with Manogue in the league title race again.
