Quilters create warm, wonderful gifts

The 140 members of the Carson Valley Quilt Guild work year-round to create functional and beautiful quilts. A smaller group, the guild's charitable donations committee led by chair Julie Thomas, met Monday to decide who would receive the fruits of their labors at the holidays.

"Austin's House is one of our biggest beneficiaries," said Thomas. "They got 17 quilts at the beginning of the year and will get 10 more by the end of the year.

"The kids at Austin's House get to choose which quilt they want. They're theirs to keep."

She said 10 quilts have been designated for the Christmas gift bag project by Young at Heart, the Douglas County Senior Center and students from Douglas High School. Four or five will go to Project Santa Claus.

"We get requests during the year to make quilts whenever someone wants them for fundraisers and raffles," Thomas said.

"We always have something in process, like an assembly line. We're always making quilts and we have fun doing it."

The Carson Valley Quilt Guild meets at 6:30 p.m. on the fourth Mondays of the month and for board meetings at 6-8 p.m. on the first Monday of the month at Carson Valley United Methodist Church, 1375 Centerville Road. All quilters welcome. Information, 267-3440.
