Volleyball: Douglas sweeps McQueen in round 1

The Douglas High volleyball team swept past McQueen 25-16, 28-26, 25-18 Wednesday night to advance to the regional semifinals against Damonte Ranch.

The Tigers will meet the Mustangs Friday night at 7 p.m. at Bishop Manogue High School.

Douglas held off a McQueen rally in the second game to push ahead to the sweep.

"We came out strong and the girls worked real hard to finish well," Douglas coach Suzi Townsell said. "We had a couple hiccups in the middle there, but they were able to fight through it and find a way to win. That was good."

The Lancers relied heavily on its scrappy defense to keep the ball in play and stepped up its blocking against the Tiger outside hitter in game two.

"You have to give them credit," Townsell said. "McQueen played smart volleyball in that second game and gave us a run there.

"Overall, our girls played really well. It was a good start to the playoffs."

Jourdan Burke led the Tigers with 12 kills, Shannon Dugan had 10 kills and Emily Garcia had 11 kills and 10 blocks in the game.

Jackie Harper had 33 assists and two aces, Mysta Townsell had 16 assists and 10 service points.

Brenna White had eight kills and seven service points as well.

The Sierra League champion Mustangs made short work of Spanish Springs in the first round, winning 25-10, 25-9, 25-16, setting up the third match between Douglas and Damonte this season.

Damonte swept the Tigers in September and prevailed 3-1 in a mid-October matchup that saw two games decided by two points and a third decided by three.
