Softballs to soldiers

EDITOR:

My son, Don Herbert, is in the Army and stationed at Camp Justice, Iraq. He e-mailed me asking if I could get some sports equipment sent over for the troops at Camp Justice - things like Frisbees, softballs, mitts, etc. My first thought was the Douglas County Recreation Department, thinking that perhaps they had some old softballs they would be willing to donate. I contacted Andy Braun, the recreation coordinator, and he told me that starting in 2010 the softballs had to be yellow and he had some white ones he could donate. I went to pick them up and I was so very surprised to find that he had over nine dozen balls, five bats, scorepads, and rulebooks. They can start their own league over there. The equipment is on its way to Iraq and Don was astonished with the amount being sent. On behalf of Charlie Company, I would like to thank the Douglas County Recreation Department, particularly Andy Braun, for helping to make Iraq a better place to be for our troops.

God bless our troops.
