Fishing Derby in need of volunteers, sponsors

Organizers of the Kids Fishing Derby will be at the Big Mama's Car show at Lampe Park on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. 


The derby is June 6-7 at Lampe Park.


Registration forms will be available, as will volunteer signups and raffle tickets.


They are also scheduled to be at the Lahontan National Fish Hatchery's Open House in Gardnerville on May 16 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., accepting registration forms, volunteer sign ups, donations and selling raffle tickets.


Raffle tickets are $1 each or six for $5. Grand prizes this year include a 150 cc quad with helmet and gloves and a pontoon boat.


Along with the Douglas County Parks & Recreation Department offices on Waterloo, KFD has set up a number of additional registration locations this year. Registration at the recreation department runs through May 22.


Two locations in Carson City -- the Sporting Rage at 4338 South Carson, phone number 885-7773, and the Boot Barn, formerly Coral West located in the Gottchalks mall at 1203 South Carson, phone 885-1481.


The Douglas County Chamber of Commerce will also be accepting registrations from May 25 to 30. As of May 5, there are 988 kids registered for the derby --  391 for the first session, 356 for the second session, 54 for the third session, 5 for the special needs session, 53 for the fifth session, 76 for the sixth session, and 21 for the seventh session.  All sessions are still available, but pre registration is mandatory.

Volunteers between the ages of 13 and 15 must attend one training class. There will be no exceptions. This class is also provided to any adult river help volunteer. The dates for the training classes are:  May 23 at 9 a.m., May 30 at 10:00 a.m. and June 3 at 7 p.m.


The mandatory volunteer meetings (these are not to be confused with the river help training classes) are May 30 at 9 a.m. and June 3 at 6 p.m.


All training classes and volunteer meetings will be held at Lampe Park in the pavillion.
