Man sent to regimental discipline camp

A 25-year-old Gardnerville man was sentenced to regimental discipline camp after he admitted beating a man he believed was responsible for his mother's death.

Cassidy Michael pleaded guilty to invasion of the home stemming from the Dec. 9, 2008, attack on the victim.

Michael agreed to pay $2,000 restitution for the victim's injuries. He suffered broken cheek bones, broken nose and broken palate.

Michael will be housed at Nevada State Prison for 30 days before he is transferred to the 190-day boot camp.

His sentencing on the felony will be deferred pending completion of the program.

Prosecutor Laurie Trotter said officials were unable to conclusively determine the circumstances of the death of Michael's mother.

The victim called 911 while Michael was trying to break down his door. He told dispatch he didn't know who was at the door. A few seconds later, a loud male voice asks the victim several times to whom he is speaking and proceeds to attack the man. The recording faintly picks up the male voice yelling at the victim, "You killed my mom, I'm going to kill you."

The 911 line goes dead after one minute of recording, according to reports.

The victim was not present in court for Michael's sentencing.

"I need to find better ways to deal with the person involved without violence or harsh words," Michael told District Judge Michael Gibbons.

The judge told Michael if he weren't eligible for boot camp, he would be going to prison.

"You are right on the edge," Gibbons said.
