Softball: Douglas High opens year 2-3

The Douglas softball team went into the weekend looking at the Sacramento Tournament as five additional scrimmage games and got the expected outcome.

"There were some good things and some bad things," Douglas coach Andy Mitchell said. "We wanted to be able to solve some spots in our starting lineup and we were able to do that. That was the biggest thing this weekend, was just being able to see the kids in different situations."

Douglas went 2-3 for the weekend, with wins over Fallon (7-6) and Granite Bay (17-2) and losses to Del Oro (6-5), Vacaville (16-7) and Rancho Cordova (5-3).

"We played everyone evenly, made set substitutions and left people in because they were scheduled to play," Mitchell said. "It was a good weekend overall."

Douglas opened the tournament against Fallon, coincidentally the same team the Tigers will see with the opening of Sierra League play this week, and built a convincing 7-0 lead early on.

The Greenwave battled back to make it close, but the Tigers held on for the win.

"Obviously we are going to see them again very soon," Mitchell said. "We didn't want to show them too much too early. We hung on to win it, so that was good."

Douglas followed with the losses to Del Oro and Vacaville, which put them fourth in pool play, although just a win away from being first.

Mitchell noted the play of first baseman Morgan Blomstrom, Brenna White and Ally Murray over the weekend.

"Morgan probably had the best overall weekend, Brenna probably solidified her spot at second base and Ally did well wherever we put her," Mitchell said. "She'll be a great utility player this year."

Mackenzie Cauley hit a home run for the team and freshman Chelsea Fent made her first varsity starts in the circle.

"Chelsea really did a pretty good job," Mitchell said.

Douglas travels to McQueen Tuesday afternoon and plays at Fallon Thursday before coming home for a doubleheader against the Greenwave Saturday at 10 a.m.
