Nevada diabetes death rate lowest in nation

The chances of dying of diabetes in Nevada are the lowest in all 50 states, according to a new bulletin issued by the National Center for Health Statistics.

Nevadans also have the third lowest rate for Alzheimer's Disease in the nation.

According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, there isn't exactly cause for celebration, though, since the Silver State ranks above the national rate for seven of the 10 leading causes of death, including heart disease, cancer, chronic lower respiratory disease, accidents, influenza and pneumonia, kidney disease and septicemia.

The new report is available online at the Centers for Disease Control Web site showing statistics for each of the 50 states.

Not all the information available is about health. Forty-two percent of Nevada births in 2007 were to unmarried mothers, ranking 14th in the nation. On the other hand, the number of marriages in the state was seven times higher than the rest of the nation. According to the report, 49.3 people per 1,000 got hitched in 2007, compared with 7.3 nationwide, an indication people are still coming to Nevada to get married.
