Track: Lady Tigers win Big George Invite

The Douglas High girls' track team continued its amazing season Saturday afternoon, winning the Big George Invitational in impressive fashion.

The Tigers broke five meet records in their home meet and scored 236.4 points as a team, well ahead of second place Damonte Ranch, who came in with 94.

For the season, the Tiger girls have won six of their seven meets (they came in third at the Reed Rotary Invitational earlier in the month behind Reno and McQueen, but did not have the services of standout thrower Jessica Waggoner at the meet) and are rolling into the Regional trials next week as one of the favorites to win the team title.

On Saturday, sophomore Kyra Barth led the charge for the Lady Tigers, breaking in the meet records in both the 100 hurdles (15.24 seconds) and the 300 hurdles (48.46) and tying second in the high jump along with teammate Jessica Gorton with a leap of 4-10.

Waggoner beat her own meet record in the discus by almost five feet at 131-5 and Liz Nickles topped the meet record in the long jump by an inch at 16-7.

The 4x800 team of Tia Lyons, Taylor Biaggi, Natalie Freitas and Cara Dunkelman continued to hone in on the school record of 9:51.14 with a meet-record 9:56.72 on Saturday.

Other highlight performances for the girls included Halie Niehoff winning the 400 with a time of 1:03.35. Biaggi won the 3,200 with a time of 12:51.35. The 4x400 squad won its event with a time of 4:11.94

Katie Dry took second in the 100, Dunkelman was second in the 800 and Sadie Gastelum was second in the 3,200.

Amanda Brazeau was third in the pole vault, followed by Shannon Prinz and Whitney Bullion and Nickles led a sweep in the long jump, followed by Gorton and Natasha Brown.

Brown took second in the triple jump, followed by Nickels.

On the boys' side, junior Jordan Cruz took second in both the 100 and 200 events and the 4x400 relay team took second with a time of 3:40.77.

Sierra Lutheran's Wade Meddles also set meet records in the 1,600 and 3,200, easily winning both events with times of 4:36.25 and 9:54.90 respectively.
