Girls' Golf: Tigers stretch league win streak to 10

Rebounding from a tough week at South Lake Tahoe, the Douglas High girls' golf team cruised to its 10th consecutive league tournament win Thursday at Arrowcreek.

Douglas shot a team 340 to run away with the win. Manogue was closest at 371, followed by Damonte Ranch (406) and Carson (416).

"It was a stellar week for the team," Douglas coach Steve Gustafson said. "They had a great week of practice and a great day on the golf course. Arrowcreek is a difficult track. The girls played smart golf today."

Sophomore Bethany Wurster led the way for the Tigers, sinking five birdies on her way to a 77 to win the individual medal.

"She had an incredible day," Gustafson said, "She struggled a bit on the par-3s, but she made up for it on the par-5s.

Senior Shelby Louie was not far behind at 82 (third place), Heather Hender took eighth at 88 and Michele Nikkels rounded out the team card in ninth at 93.

First-year junior Annika Crowe shot a 117 to finish ahead of 14 other players in the tournament.

"Shelby and Heather both played very well," Gustafson said. "They are both long off the tee, which on this course could get you into trouble. They kept the ball in the short stuff and made a lot of pars. As their coach, I couldn't be more proud of their course management today.

"Michele continued to play consistent, making a lot of pars on the front nine. Annika continues to get better each tournament. This course is tough on beginning players and she outscored 14 other players."
