at college

Carson Valley Art Association artists display 28 paintings and photos in the central hall of Western Nevada College Douglas, 1680 Bently Parkway in Minden. The work may be viewed by the public Monday through Friday until Sept. 30. Information, Ron Clarke, 782-8035.

Wild horses exhibit

Artisans International Gallery presents an exhibit of work by local area artists on the theme of wild horses through Dec. 20.

"The theme of wild horses is an homage to our Nevada heritage," said Artisans International Gallery owner Bronwyn Mason. "When you go out into the Pine Nut Mountains and encounter these beautiful animals, it evokes a sense of the wild west and the longevity of the mustangs and their ability to sustain themselves over generations of progress."

Artisans International Gallery is at 1653 Lucerne St., Suite B in Minden Village. Information, 783-8881.

Artist receives award

Charles Muench's painting "The Sentinel" was awarded the Collectors Choice Award at the Maynard Dixon Country 2008 Exhibition in Mt. Carmel, Utah. The award includes a prize of $3,000.

The Thunderbird Foundation for the Arts hosts the Maynard Dixon Country art show, a gathering and sale of work by about 40 American painters, every August.

The weekend-long art show is open to the public and features lectures, art preview, a wet paintings sale, painting demonstrations and a gala awards dinner. Many of the proceeds from art sales at Maynard Dixon Country support the Thunderbird Foundation's projects, including art day camps for people with special needs, the artist retreat program and the emerging artist scholarships for three Utah high school students to join the professionals at Maynard Dixon Country.

Muench's art is displayed at Lone Tree Gallery, 1598 Esmeralda Ave., Minden.

Fall foliage exhibit

Artisans International Gallery presents an exhibit of work by local area artists on the theme of fall foliage, Tuesday through Oct. 25.

"The theme of fall foliage is meant to inspire all kinds of media choices. You can think of the foliage in terms of color, texture, shapes, or whatever inspires you for the time of year," said Artisans International Gallery owner Bronwyn Mason. "The theme has great appeal to many viewers as it is a way to get us into the spirit of autumn and all of its glorious colors and sounds."

Meet the artists at a reception, 3-5 p.m. Sept. 13, at Artisans International Gallery, 1653 Lucerne St., Suite B in Minden Village. Information, 783-8881.

Meet the artist

Artistic Viewpoints Gallery and Studio features guest artist Naomi Nickerson during September. Meet the artist at a wine and cheese reception, 4-7 p.m. Sept. 12 at Artistic Viewpoints Gallery and Studio, 1572 Highway 395, Minden. Information, 783-0633.

Nickerson received a bachelor's degree in painting from the San Francisco Art Institute and a Master of Fine Arts from the Hoffberger School of Painting, where she studied under abstract expressionist Grace Hartigan. Nickerson's art has been influenced by travels to Nigeria with the Peace Corps and her time volunteering with AmeriCorps Vista in Washington, D.C.

Nickerson's oil on masonite works involve cutting pieces with a coping saw, using spackle, dry pigments, spray paint and oil paints. She lives in Reno and teaches part-time at Western Nevada College and Truckee Meadows Community College.
