Hauntings begin

Here we are, almost at the end of October. Get out and snap photos of these gorgeous fall colors and send them in to our October photo contest by 4 p.m. Oct. 31.

Today is the start of our annual weekend of Ghost Walks. If you don't already have tickets, call 782-2555 to see what tour times are still available. Each event is $5 per person " a small price to pay for all you'll see and learn about Douglas County's founding fathers and mothers.

Tonight's tours leave from the Carson Valley Museum & Cultural Center in Gardnerville at 6:30 p.m., 7:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. and visit historic sites like Trinity Lutheran Church and the old Gardnerville Hospital. Saturday's tours start at the Garden Cemetery and depart every 15 minutes from 6:30-8 p.m. Sunday's tours meet at the Genoa Court House Museum and depart at 10:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m.

The museum will be closed for Nevada Day on Nov. 1 so there will be no Student/Senior Day this month. Head on up to the Nevada Day celebration in Carson City on Saturday and join in the fun.

Our monthly lecture series continues 7 p.m. Nov. 13 when Mike Makley talks about William Sharon versus John Mackay in the "Fight for the Comstock Riches." These were two major power brokers during the days of the big bonanza. Admission is free and the Main Street Bookstore is open before and after the lecture.

While there are many books available at our Main Street Bookstore, one book you should not overlook is the 2009 Entertainment Book. The book sells for $25 and goes into effect in November. Inside there are discount coupons for restaurants, shops, even events and movie theaters. Get yours and get ready to save some money for a change.

The way time is flying, our Holiday Gala on Dec. 6 is right around the corner. Applications for decorating our Christmas trees for the 12th annual Gala of Trees will soon be available. Look for more information here or call 782-2555. Decorating should start Thanksgiving weekend.

Also during the Dec. 6 Holiday Gala is our annual Cookie Walk where you can get all the Christmas cookies you have ever wanted without having to bake a thing. Bring the kids and grandkids along as Santa will be there with his sleigh for photos.

If you have any questions, call the Douglas County Historical Society at the Carson Valley Museum & Cultural Center in Gardnerville at 782-2555. Visit our Web site at www.historicnevada.org. Remember, DCHS and its two museums, the Gardnerville museum and the Genoa Court House Museum, do not receive any regular state or county funding. It's up to our members and friends to help us keep our doors open.
