Need exceeded donations at food closet in September

Editor:

The month of September brought a 35 percent increase in the number of families and individuals in need at the Carson Valley Community Food Closet. All recipients of the food closet are qualified based on income. Thanks to the support of local grocers, the Food Bank of Northern Nevada and individual donations in both cash and food, the shelves are stocked each month for distribution. In addition, cash and food donations were down 25 percent for the month. What this means is that our needs exceeded the amount of donations.

To solve this problem we need to call on the local community to help us get through the upcoming winter months. You can help by donating canned goods and non-perishable items directly to the food closet. Whether it's time to clean your pantry or buying extra canned goods at the store, we can use your surplus. If you are a business, you can request a bin to sponsor your own food drive effort. Cash donations are also accepted and are tax deductible.

Let's rally our efforts and see what a community working together can do.

The Carson Valley Community Food Closet is at 1255 Waterloo Lane in Gardnerville. Donations can be dropped off Monday through Wednesday and Friday from 1-4 p.m. For more information, call 782-3711.
