Nonpartisan, minor party voter numbers increase 7.5 percent

About 200 people signed up on the last day of voter registration Tuesday.

Douglas County elections supervisor Concha Lord said clerks are still going through the new forms, but that it appeared many were non-partisan.

"The majority we've done in the last 3 or 4 days have been nonpartisan," she said. "It's a little surprising. We were commenting on it as we were going through the forms."

Since Oct. 1, nonpartisan and minor party voters have increased 7.5 percent. The number of Democrats increased 4.5 percent and Republicans 2.24 percent.

Lord said preliminary numbers shows Douglas County Republicans are short of their traditional 2-1 margin among county voters.

As of Wednesday, Lord said there were 17,103 Republicans, and 9,763 Democrats. She said that in all 33,654 people are registered to vote in Douglas County, a 1,205-voter increase since Oct. 1.

She said once all the new voter registrations are verified, the numbers won't change by more than a few hundred.

The total marks an increase of more than 6,000 registered voters since the 2006 general election and 7,000 voters since the record turnout in the 2004 general election.
