Max Baer's derrick and readerboard are back on the Planning Commission's agenda for today. The formal request is for a variance to increase the height of the sign from 30 feet to 109 feet, the sign area from 115 square feet to 2,423 square feet and a reduction of the sign base from 60 feet to 48 feet. Planning commissioners meet 1 p.m. today in the Douglas County Administrative Building, 1616 Eighth St.

We have a school board race with two veterans of the Indian Hills General Improvement District's city hood fight signing up for Area 1 School Board Trustee. Charles Swanson filed last week. On Monday Dianne Humble-Fournier filed for the seat being held by Karen Chessell, who has yet to file.

A big old high pressure zone is building over the West Coast and is forecast to spread into Western Nevada over the weekend. Expect record high temperatures to fall as the heat builds in, with afternoon temperatures in the low 90s. The National Weather Service is expecting temperatures to be about 20 degrees above average.

Enjoy today and Wednesday's mid-70s while you can. The high is expected to hit 88 on Friday and 91 on Saturday. High temperatures may fire off some thunderstorms on Sunday.
