Brothers jailed in chase

A pair of Carson City brothers, familiar to law enforcement for their connection to Carson City street gangs, remained jailed Monday after a police pursuit Sunday in which a child was a passenger.

Gabriel "Bobby" Munoz, 33, also known as Psycho, and Cesar Munoz, 30, also known as Thumper, were arrested just before 2 p.m. on Sunday.

According to police reports, a Carson City deputy spotted Gabriel Munoz's vehicle westbound on Colorado Street about 1:30 p.m. driving 35 mph in a 25 mph zone. A bandana was hanging from the rearview mirror, which the deputy determined obstructed the driver's view.

When the officer attempted to stop the vehicle, "the driver slowed down as if to pull over, then rapidly accelerated and began eluding," the report states.

Gabriel Munoz allegedly headed west onto Sonoma Street then crossed Carson Street where his vehicle was "almost T-boned from the right side by a white Dodge Ram."

Reaching speeds of 65 mph, he allegedly then led officers on a chase to an apartment complex at Vista Grande and Opalite drives in Douglas County.

There he and his brother Cesar Munoz and a passenger were arrested at gunpoint.

Gabriel's 1-year-old son was found unharmed in the back seat.

According to the report, several people came out of the complex and began to "scream" at officers. Among those was Gabriel Munoz's son's grandfather, who was arrested on suspicion of misdemeanor obstructing.

Korinna Archuleta said her boyfriend, Gabriel, called her parents during the pursuit and was trying to take his son to them.

"He wanted them to run outside to grab the baby from him. He didn't want the baby in the middle of that," said Archuleta, who was in California visiting family when the incident happened. "My dad was thinking, I just want to get my grandson out of the car."

According to the report, after his arrest, Gabriel Munoz threatened the arresting officer. A "slim Jim," a tool to pick car door locks, was found along with other tools inside the vehicle.

Gabriel Munoz was booked into jail on suspicion of felony eluding police, gross misdemeanor child endangerment, possession of burglary tools, misdemeanor speeding, obstructing windshield, threats. Bail was set at $20,000.

Cesar Munoz was booked on suspicion of felony violation of probation. He was on probation for fraudulent use of a credit card and last had phone contact with Parole and Probation on Sept. 9. He last saw his probation officer on Aug. 31. No bail was set for him.

The passenger was charged with misdemeanor obstructing "due to the fact that he never made an attempt to exit the vehicle or stop Gabriel from fleeing," the report states.
