Cowboy poet featured at museum

Student Day features "Sleepin' in the Bunkhouse" author Ken Gardner speaking about cowboy poetry at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Saturday at the Carson Valley Museum & Cultural Center, 1477 Highway 395, Gardnerville.

The Genoa resident plans to discuss what cowboy poetry is during the museum lecture.

"It's poetry with rhythm and meter. It's about animals, nature, the out-of-doors and sometimes old reprobates," said Gardner.

"Cowboy poetry is sometimes known for having a punch line or a twist at the end. They can be about memories, it can be religious or introspective. You can recognize it when you hear it."

Gardner's presentation includes examples of his and others' cowboy poetry, a short video on the subject and an instruction period where participants learn to write their own poems.

The free lecture is geared to older students and adults. Seniors, students and a required accompanying adult admitted free to the museum and presentation every first Saturday of the month.

Tours of the museum by costumed guides at 10 a.m., noon and 2 p.m.
